Key Clinical Message: The main target of this report was that brucellosis can occur in unexpected and very rare patterns. We reported this patient to acknowledge all of clinicians especially those living in the endemic areas, that these rare complications of brucellosis can also be treated by the standard treatment of this disease. Abstract: Brucellosis is a thousand-face disease and common zoonotic infection in endemic regions. A 42-year-old female was admitted with sternoclavicular arthritis and breast abscess. After laboratory investigation and imaging, positive serological test results and positive blood culture for Brucella revealed acute sternoclavicular arthritis and breast abscess due to brucellosis.

BACKGROUND: Anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome is a rare adverse drug reaction associated with aromatic anticonvulsant drugs. This syndrome can range from mild cutaneous rash to drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms that include fever, rash, lymphadenopathy, pancytopenia, and involvement of multiple internal organs. We aimed to report this case in the literature and make physicians aware of the uncommon symptoms of this syndrome when they prescribe antiepileptic medications in particular. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Middle Eastern female patient from Iran with free past medical and allergic history was admitted to hospital because of fever, rash, lymphadenopathy, and pancytopenia after taking anticonvulsants due to new-onset seizure. High fever and cutaneous rash along with lymphadenopathy following administration of anticonvulsant medications that could not be explained by other causes alerted the physician to the possibility of this syndrome. Our investigation revealed no further diagnosis and 1 week after discontinuation of the drugs, her symptoms were resolved. Anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion and immediate discontinuation of the suspicious drugs is necessary. Hence, early recognition can prevent permanent multiorgan damage. CONCLUSIONS: Chlorpheniramine as a simple treatment was provided for this syndrome.

Background: Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer remains a leading cause of death in women worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs are a new class of RNA molecules that have been shown to participate in tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of lncUSMycN in tumor samples and to evaluate its potential role in the breast cancer cell line. Methods: Real-time polymerase chain reaction was employed to assess lncUSMycN expression in breast tumor tissues and cancer cell lines. Furthermore, small interfering RNA was used to knockdown lncUSMycN. Results: The data showed the significant up-regulation of lncUSMycN in tumor tissues compared to non-tumor specimens (95% CI, p = 0.002). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis demonstrated the biomarker potential of lncUSMycN (ROCAUC = 0.70, p < 0.001) for invasive breast ductal carcinoma. Furthermore, lncUSMycN knockdown induced apoptosis and suppressed cellular migration in breast cancer cells (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The findings highlight the pivotal role of lncUSMycN in tumorigenesis, providing a new potential target for breast cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly-diagnosed malignancies throughout the world and the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths globally. Angiogenesis and the resultant tumor neovascularization is a well-known cancer hallmark. Here we investigated the expression of FLT1 and KDR, the influential genes in angiogenesis regulation, in CRC patients. METHODS: We assessed FLT1 and KDR mRNA expression in 47 CRC samples and matched adjacent noncancerous tissues (ANCT) by quantitative real-time PCR. The Spearmen correlation coefficient and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were also examined. RESULTS: Both genes were expressed at significantly greater levels in CRC tissues than in ANCT (p < 0.05). A significant association was found between KDR expression and disease stage and lymph status in CRC patients. Furthermore, the Spearman correlation demonstrated a moderate correlation between FLT1 and KDR expression in CRC samples. Finally, ROC curve analysis demonstrated that FLT1 had the greatest sensitivity (85.1%), while the greatest specificity was achieved by a combination of the two genes. CONCLUSION: The dysregulated FLT1 and KDR expression, in addition to the observed correlation and ROC curve results, indicate the critical importance of angiogenesis among the cancer pathways in CRC. These data can broaden our current knowledge of angiogenesis in CRC to improve disease diagnosis and patient treatment.

The WRAP53 (WD40-encoding RNA antisense to p53) gene encodes an antisense RNA, essential for p53 stabilization and induction upon DNA damage. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in WRAP53 have been associated with risk of cancer, which strengthens the role of WRAP53 in the pathogenesis of human malignancies. In fact, WRAP53 has been considered as a candidate cancer susceptibility gene. Accordingly, we performed a study to examine the association of a frequent genetic variation in WRAP53, rs2287499 (C/G), with breast cancer risk and prognosis among Iranian-Azeri population. A case-control association study, including 206 cases and 203 controls from Iranian-Azeri population, was conducted. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and tumor samples by salting-out method. SNP genotyping was carried out by polymerase chain reaction-based single-strand conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) technique. The sequence variation of SSCP banding patterns was determined by sequencing. The collected data were analyzed through statistical package for the social sciences software, using Chi-square (χ (2)) or Fisher's exact tests, with a significance level of 0.05. No significant differences in the allele and genotype frequencies between cases and controls were detected. Similarly, no significant associations between genotypes and clinicopathological data were observed. Concisely, no significant overall associations between rs2287499 and breast cancer risk and prognosis were detected in the studied population. The rs2287499 SNP is not associated with breast cancer predisposition in Iranian-Azeri women; it also cannot be used as a molecular biomarker to predict breast cancer prognosis in Iranian-Azeri population.
